What does Roadside Assistance NOT cover?

While roadside assistance coverage can help you get back on the road when you’re stranded, there are some things that roadside assistance will not cover.

Mechanical repairs

Roadside Assistance helps when your car breaks down, but it doesn't pay for mechanical repairs, replacement parts, or maintenance. If your vehicle needs repairs, towing service helps get it to a repair shop.

Auto accidents

Roadside Assistance doesn't cover vehicle damage or medical expenses resulting from an accident. Collision coverage helps pay for covered damage to your car, while other insurance coverages help with injuries and related expenses.

Tire changes without a spare tire

Roadside Assistance helps replace a flat tire with your vehicle's spare, but it doesn't cover the cost of a new tire. If you don't have a usable spare, you may need towing service instead.

Long-distance towing

Roadside Assistance helps tow your vehicle when it breaks down, but towing costs that exceed your coverage limit are your responsibility. With Root, Roadside Assistance covers up to $100 per service.

Exceeding annual limits

Root covers up to three Roadside Assistance services per covered vehicle during each six-month policy period. If you exceed that limit, you'll be responsible for the cost of additional services.

Opt-in to Roadside Assistance coverage with Root

For vehicles on your policy covered by Roadside Assistance we’ll cover up to $100 per service, up to 3 times per vehicle during each 6-month policy period.

If you request service more than 3 times in that period or a service costs more than $100, you’ll pay the amount your coverage doesn’t cover. The good news is that most services cost less than $100.

Roadside assistance coverage FAQs

How much does roadside assistance coverage cost?

With Root, in most states, you can opt to include Roadside Assistance with every policy. For covered vehicles, Root pays up to $100 per service for three services during each six-month policy period. If a service costs more than $100 or you exceed your service limit, you'll pay the difference.

Does roadside assistance cover towing, and how far will they tow?

Yes, Root's Roadside Assistance includes towing when your vehicle breaks down. You can choose where your car gets towed, but Root covers up to $100 per service. If the towing cost exceeds that amount, you'll be responsible for the remaining balance. The distance covered depends on the towing provider's rates.

Does Roadside assistance cover rental cars?

Root's Roadside Assistance generally applies to covered vehicles listed on your policy, not rental cars. If you need help with a rental vehicle, check your rental agreement for available roadside services. Rental Coverage is separate and helps pay for a temporary vehicle after certain covered accidents.

Does using Roadside assistance raise my insurance rates?

Using Roadside Assistance doesn't automatically increase your car insurance rate. However, insurance rates depend on several factors, including your driving history and policy details. With Root, your driving behavior is the number one factor in determining your rate.

Does Roadside Assistance cover any car I'm driving or only my insured vehicle?

Root's Roadside Assistance applies to covered vehicles listed on your policy, or to newly acquired vehicles. It does not apply to every car you drive. If you're driving a borrowed or rental vehicle, Roadside Assistance through your Root policy generally won't apply. Check your policy to confirm which vehicles have coverage.

Does roadside assistance work if my car breaks down in another state?

Yes, Root's Roadside Assistance generally works when you're traveling outside your home state, as long as you're driving a covered vehicle and service is available in your location. You can request help directly through the Root app, whether you're close to home or on a road trip. Your policy's service and cost limits still apply.
