Happily Ever After

How independent agents can retain clients when prices are unpredictable

True love isn’t a fairy tale—it’s choosing the same person every day, far past when that initial spark wears off. It might not be a marriage, but an agent-client relationship that’s built solely on low rates is a rocky one. You can’t control price fluctuations, so how do you prevent clients from jumping ship when a lower rate elsewhere catches their eye?

Here are five tips for developing and maintaining successful long-term relationships with your clients so you can have a happily ever after, even when rates are unpredictable.

1. Get to know them.

When you talk to your clients, try to connect beyond insurance. Why did they choose their car? Do they have kids they’ll be chauffeuring around? What about any favorite hobbies? Getting to know your client on a human-to-human level opens a door to a less superficial relationship.

2. Be communicative.

From sending monthly check-in emails to personalized holiday cards, staying on your clients’ radars is imperative to relationship building. Not only will you be top of mind, but you’re demonstrating that you care.

3. Build trust through other clients.

Your book of business isn’t just a source of income—it’s a list of people who can vouch for your services. A few positive reviews on rating platforms like Yelp, Trustpilot, and Google Reviews go a long way. Make it easy for clients to leave feedback by including links to these platforms in your email footer and on your website.

4. Requote.

Stay on top of opportunities to requote your clients. This means keeping a calendar to note when policies are almost up for renewal and routinely checking with carriers for pricing updates.

5. Ask for feedback.

Check in with your clients. Are there any gaps you could fill? Anything they’re confused about? You may not have all of life’s answers, but you can be a trusted source for car insurance questions.

All-in-all, it’s up to you to decide how personal you get with your clients. It’s important to establish a professional boundary, but letting your personality come through and showing some interest in your clients’ lives can lead to a sturdier agent-client relationship that stands the test of rate fluctuation.
