Frequently asked questions

How may we help?

  1. What is Root?

Root is the first insurance company founded on the principle of Fundamental Fairness.

We are an insurance company that creates new, personalized products that give good drivers the protection they deserve, at the rates they deserve. And believe it or not, that makes us unlike every other insurance company.

  2. Where is Root Insurance available?

Root is available to drivers in Ohio, Indiana and Arizona, and we are rapidly expanding.

Follow us on Facebook or Twitter to be the first to know when Root is available in your state!

  3. How do I get a quote?

It’s simple. Go to the App Store or Play Store, search for “Root - Car Insurance”, and download our app. From there, you’ll be asked to enter basic information, and then start driving. After a couple weeks, we’ll give you a personalized, fair quote.

  4. How much does it cost?

For good drivers, Root is an order of magnitude cheaper than other insurance companies.

Our base price is the price you deserve, determined by your actual driving habits rather than just demographics. Drive with our app to discover your rate.

  5. How can you only insure good drivers?

We use technology to determine how well you drive, and depending on that, we give you a fair rate to match.

By only insuring good drivers, based on data such as braking, speed, and amount driven, we know who the good drivers are and their likelihood of getting into an accident.

We call this “good risk.” We’re the only insurance company able to give good drivers the price they deserve because head-to-head, our business model wins. We are able to measure and predict risk in order to identify good drivers better than anyone else.

  6. How do you determine good drivers?

We have created an entirely new insurance platform, one that utilizes mobile devices and our unique predictive analytics technologies.

Through the Root app, we look at real-world driving data like mileage, routes, and speed to determine precisely how safely you drive. In order to accurately determine your quote, we run your ambient driving data against our predictive algorithms to determine your specific level of risk. It considers hundreds of factors, such as mileage driven, hard-braking, dangerous routes, driving regularity, time of day, and much more.

Most insurance companies only see this kind of data for a minority of their customers, and they are not using that data for your benefit. We use that information to give fair, personalized prices to good drivers.

  7. Are you available for iPhone and Android users?

Yes! We are now available for both iPhone and Android.

  10. Can you give me an overview of your coverage?

We’re here to provide the right coverage for you so you can focus on the things that matter. We’ll help you figure out the best level of coverage – whether that’s sticking with your current package or working with us to figure out the level that fits your needs.

We lay it all out for you below, but just know that we’re here to make it work for you.

Our liability coverage will make sure you’re covered for any damage that your vehicle causes to others. Bodily Injury coverage will pay for injuries suffered by anyone besides you and your passengers when you cause an accident. Property Damage coverage will pay for any damage to other vehicles or other property when you cause an accident. These coverages are required by law in most states and we will make sure your limits meet the minimum requirements.

In addition to these two liability coverages we also offer some optional products. Medical Payments coverage pays for the medical expenses for you and those in your vehicle when you’re in an accident, regardless of who caused it. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury coverage protects you from getting stuck with high medical bills when you are injured by a vehicle whose driver does not have insurance or does not have enough insurance to cover your expenses.

You’ll also have the option to add coverage for any physical damage to your vehicle. Collision coverage will pay for any damage to your vehicle when you cause an accident. Comprehensive coverage will pay for any damage to your vehicle caused by anything other than an accident (think hail damage, theft, hitting a deer...). For both of these coverages you’ll be able to choose the deductible, the amount that you’re willing to pay out of pocket for these damages, and we’ll cover the rest.

As an added bonus, each policy comes with roadside assistance coverage. If you find yourself in need of a tow truck or a jump-start, we’re there to help.

If you already have a policy in effect when you get your Root quote, no need to worry! We’ll cancel your current policy for you and make sure that you’re refunded for the unused portion of your premium.

  11. What’s your approach to data privacy?

Your privacy (and ours) is important to us. While we believe that data has tremendous power to make things easier, better, and - in the case of car insurance - more fair, we also believe that data should always be kept safe, secure, and only in the hands of the people you entrusted it to. We take it so seriously, that we are putting our privacy promise front and center. (And, of course, in full legalese in our Privacy Policy. Here we go.

We promise to only collect information that we need to give you the best experience we can and only when you give us permission to collect it. And we strive to make it as easy as possible to let us know should you ever change your mind. Unless it is required by law or regulation, we only share your data with our partners who help us provide you with the best possible insurance. We will not share your data with anyone else outside of our organization (unless, of course, you ask us to). And we will not sell or rent your information to anyone. Ever.

At heart, we are a technology company, so we promise to protect your data using the best hardware and software tools we have at our disposal. After all, our data is in there too. We take offline data just as seriously and keep it all in a secure environment.

We promise to treat your data like it is our own. Always.

  12. How do I know you’re financially stable?

We get it. When you buy insurance, you’re also buying peace of mind that if something goes wrong, your insurance company has your back – and deep pockets. Yes, we’re new, but you can be confident that we have thought through every contingency to ensure you and your loved ones are always protected.

We are backed by Drive Capital and Silicon Valley Bank, and we keep significant capital reserves so that we always have cash on hand to support our customers. Above that, we are reinsured* by Munich Re, one of the largest reinsurance companies in the world. They have been in business since 1880 – that’s a long time, even in the insurance world. Bottom line, we have not just one, but multiple layers of protection in place so that you don’t have to worry. At least not about your car insurance.

*Insurance speak for when an insurance company transfers part of the risk to another company (one that you’ll never have to deal with or worry about). These types of relationships were created to prevent insurance companies from getting in over their heads. It’s good for us and you.

  13. What happens if you’re a bad driver?

We’re not here to take advantage of you. We want you to have the best rate, even if it isn’t with us! So if your driving situation doesn’t fit our rating models, we won’t offer you a quote. It’s that simple and straightforward.

  14. Are you a licensed insurance carrier?

We are an official carrier licensed by the Ohio, Indiana and Arizona Departments of Insurance. We are backed by the largest reinsurance company in the world, and we're a member of both the Ohio Insurance Guaranty Association and the Arizona Property and Casualty Insurance Guaranty Fund.

  15. How do you collect data?

We collect mobile GPS data through your phone. No other equipment required.

  16. Are you hiring?

Yes, we’re hiring! Head over to our Careers page to learn about our latest openings.

  17. How do you know if I'm the driver or a passenger?

We want to give you a driving score based only on how you drive - not your friend or Uber driver! In order to do this, we use machine learning algorithms to identify patterns in the location and motion data we receive from your phone. These patterns look different for drivers vs. passengers, as well as different types of transportation, like driving vs. biking or walking. Your driving score is then calculated based on the data collected from your actual drive time.
