We’re hiring a Director of Actuarial Operations in Columbus, OH

Update: We're excited that you're interested in Root. In order to maintain a great candidate experience while most of our folks are working from home, we've decided to pause hiring for the time being. We welcome you to apply, and if it's a great fit, we'll reach out when we start to ramp up hiring again. In the meantime, our Candidate Experience Team is working hard to optimize our existing workflows to set us up for additional scale once the situation settles down.

Our telematics data has opened the door to new ways of auto pricing: new data everywhere, new analytical approaches, and the massive computational power to finally put the two together. Combined with a rapidly scaling business, our Actuary team has shifted away from leaning on traditional approaches and focusing on leveraging more creative techniques and technologies to develop modern, robust solutions for pricing and reserving.

We're looking for a Director of Actuarial Operations to lead our operational processes and identify high-impact initiatives. As our actuary team continues to grow, you'll determine where to focus our efforts to support rapid scale and make sure things are going according to schedule. However, you won't only be focused on today; through high-level research and competitive analysis, you'll help to identify “tomorrow”. You’ll prioritize our research pipeline and coordinate its completion, helping drive our actuary team towards their next goal.

  • Own and drive execution of operational objectives across 25+ person actuarial team, spanning pricing research, rules and filings, reserving, and underwriting
  • Build and scale operational team to assist in execution
  • Identify and address areas of inefficiency
  • Determine regular reporting needs; synthesize trends and communicate to technical stakeholders and the executive team
  • Expand capabilities to monitor performance of rating and reserving functions
  • Assist in creating and executing long-term pricing strategy and segmentation pipelines; coordinate research execution phase leveraging actuarial and data science team expertise
  • Work across actuarial, data science, and product teams to transition opportunities from research to implementation
  • Define key deliverables and ensure timely execution

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a quantitative field; actuarial certification (ACAS/FCAS) preferred
  • 5-10+ years of analytics and/or operational management experience in the P&C insurance industry
  • Experience scaling a rapidly growing ops function
  • Knowledge of statistics and basic actuarial techniques with superior analytical skills; familiarity with insurance pricing strategy
  • Highly effective at fostering collaborative cross-functional relationships and communicating across both technical and non-technical roles in multiple mediums
  • Mindset to be successful in both scrappy, entrepreneurial environments as well as more sophisticated, later-stage organizations
  • Proven track record of timely and effective execution with strong attention to detail and business judgment
