We’re hiring a VP of Marketing in Columbus, OH

The role.
Meeting consumers where they are while actually engaging and holding their attention is challenging, especially given the barrage of advertising we all encounter every day - with insurance being potentially the most crowded category of all. While a differentiated product (which we’re busy building) is key, it’s not enough. You also need authentic storytelling, delivered effectively and efficiently across touchpoints, to not only create and build awareness, but also to develop a positive connection that sustains over time so that when the time is right, consumers buy and re-buy your product. Achieving this goal requires a cohesive, integrated brand marketing strategy, as well as an infrastructure that enables you to tell your story to the right consumers at the right time and in the right place. 

Root is seeking a VP of Integrated Marketing to lead the next phase of brand and business growth for the company. This role will oversee a multi-functional team that includes Brand Marketing, Product Marketing, and Marketing Operations to drive breakthrough brand and business impact. The ideal candidate is skilled at building an aligned strategic vision and roadmap while still being capable of direct execution. They make decisions based on analytics and structured, rigorous thinking, but also know when to take a creative leap of faith. And they understand the need to be scrappy and move fast while always keeping an eye toward scalability and efficiency to unlock future growth. 

What you'll do.

  • Marketing Strategy: Lead the development, planning and execution of the integrated marketing strategy for Root. Be responsible for identifying and prioritizing target audiences and initiatives. Create and execute monthly and quarterly marketing plans, determining how to most effectively leverage the budget and team to grow brand awareness, enhance the customer experience, and maximize the value of existing customers. 

  • Product Marketing: Become an expert on our products’ evolving features and benefits and help our Product teams meet their business objectives by developing and launching effective marketing and communications campaigns to support their initiatives. Oversee marketing for current and future product states, ranging from development (ideation and beta) to launch (communications and media), and ultimately lifecycle management. 

  • Brand Marketing: Drive the evolution of the brand, bringing it to life in a compelling and consistent way across platforms and touchpoints. Continue to build the brand through unique marketing campaigns that rise above the noise to acquire new customers and foster loyalty among existing customers. Ensure brand activities and go-to-market plans deepen and improve our customers’ experience. 

  • Marketing Operations: Evolve our marketing technology, processes and workflows to unlock additional growth opportunities and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of our budget and human resources. Develop, manage and allocate the media budget for the team as well as the operational budget across the full Marketing function (including teams outside of your direct area of management) in order to meet short and long-term strategic objectives.

  • Strategic thinking: Understand our business complexities and develop an innovative and creative brand marketing plan that addresses these nuances. Continuously balance speed-to-market with building what’s needed to ensure long-term growth sustainability. 

  • Deep Marketing expertise: Leverage your holistic understanding of how Brand Marketing, Performance Marketing, Product Marketing, and Marketing Operations work together to help accelerate our growth. Apply your deep understanding of individual marketing channels and platforms to simultaneously improve our marketing efficiency.

  • Data-driven decision making: Leverage data to develop, launch, and optimize effective targeted brand campaigns and experiences. Rigorously measure the effectiveness of every initiative and ruthlessly test and learn to deliver continuous performance improvements. 

  • Creative partnership: Collaborate with the Chief Brand Officer and Marketing Creative team, as well as external agencies, to uncover consumer and creative insights that lead to differentiating brand campaigns that create awareness, engagement, acquisition, and loyalty. Leverage your keen creative eye and deep strategic understanding to give on-brand creative input.

  • Cross-collaboration: Thrive while working in a matrixed team, collaborating and partnering with other functions, including Performance Marketing, Partnerships, Product, PR/Social, Consumer Insights, Creative, Finance and Legal to evangelize our brand and marketing vision and turn it into reality. 

  • Inspirational Leadership: Attract, lead, and develop a team of innovative, engaged and high performing marketing professionals; mentor and grow talent that is passionate about our brand and delivering our aggressive growth goals.

What we're looking for.

  • 12+ years of progressive Marketing leadership, including building and scaling a differentiated consumer-facing brand. Experience in tech and/or insurance preferred.
  • Have a track record of successfully partnering with internal and/or external creative teams to develop breakthrough creative. 
  • Deep understanding of campaign and media planning with an omni-channel approach that incorporates both traditional (eg, tv, radio, direct mail), digital, and emerging channels. Experience optimizing a Brand and Performance Marketing mix to achieve business objectives.
  • Obsessed with how Marketing can best deliver quality, long-term business growth and ROI. Highly analytical mindset with the ability to not only measure the gray area, but also leverage the data to make that gray area work even harder. 
  • Experience leading high-performance marketing teams in a hyper-growth environment, while creating a plan for scale. Superior problem-solver who is comfortable prioritizing (and re-prioritizing) projects in a fast-paced work environment. 
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with a roll-up-the-sleeves work ethic and a “do-what-it takes” mindset to execute against the strategy. 
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills, and ability to present complex concepts to a wide variety of stakeholders and executive leadership.
