We’re hiring a Senior Technical Journalist in Remote (or Columbus, OH)

We are rewriting the rules of insurance, and we’re looking for a full-time Senior Technical Journalist who is up for the challenge of bringing our evolved story to life.

Senior Technical Journalist can mean different things to different people. Here’s what it means at Root. This senior PR role is a magically down-to-earth mix of experienced researcher, FinTech expert, and passionate journalist. From white papers to Medium articles, interview scripts to public relations plans, you’ll be responsible for writing—and leading—PR and thought leadership content that showcases our machine learning and mobile telematic platforms. This means taking on ambiguous topics, diving deep into analytics-based content, and showcasing how we’ve built one of the most innovative FinTech companies in the world—all in an engaging, (never stuffy), supersmart way.

At Root, we embrace the love of the problem. We’ll never tell you how to tackle your PR work. Your approach and preferred working methods are your own. But we will collaborate, constantly iterate, and celebrate the end result. So if you enjoy making complicated data and analytics topics approachable and compelling, love the AP style guide, find yourself copyediting news blurbs in your inbox, but are also inclined to to find the heart of a story in topics others might find technical or complex, then this role is for you.

As a Senior Technical Journalist, you’ll also be responsible for bridging work between press, partners, and internal stakeholders. More specifically, you’ll analyze our data to extract useful stories for consumers and regulators. You’ll also keep your pulse on FinTech trends and potential with AI and rich telematics. With the help of your trusty Research Assistant, you’ll support the Director of External Communications and your PR peers to help share Root’s unique story. In partnership with the Copy Director, you’ll regularly offer your strategic perspective to PR content, act as a creative lead to your Research Assistant, drive innovative storytelling solutions to complex analytics-based content, and develop credibility for Root Inc., Root Enterprise, and Root Insurance with your direct, yet magnetic copy that communicates the spark of smart data-driven ideas—all in an unpretentious voice.

The team
Our creative marketing and PR teams are on a mission to communicate and move forward Root’s mission to disrupt the archaic, trillion-dollar insurance industry. Root is creating powerful insurance products and technology platforms that rewrite the rules for today’s world, promoting fairness, simplicity, and personalization. And we’re just getting started. We’re a tight-knit, collaborative group guided by a highly iterative, user-centered design process. With insights gained through testing, data, and thoughtful critique, we’re driving the strategy that grows our business and will change the insurance industry. You’ll be working with designers, marketing partners, product managers, engineers, c-suite leaders, data scientists, attorneys, and program managers (to name a few).

Our ideal Senior Technical Journalist will be able to masterfully update copy to Root brand standards, compose smart, engaging long-form (and sometimes short-form) copy, break down complicated concepts and make them easy to understand, and scour language for style, clarity, grammar, and punctuation—all while staying mindful of a tight production workflow.

The role
The voice of Root (that’s you)
As a Senior Technical Journalist, you are the voice of everything seen outside of our app and our customer-facing marketing pieces. Your copy is seen by press, FinTech leaders, shareholders, and fellow industry experts. Your words matter, and as a writer you have the opportunity to have a real impact on the business. Root isn’t a typical insurance (or FinTech) company. We’re not stuffy, boring, or traditional. And although we’re smart, we never want to sound pretentious, boastful, or boring. And it’s the Senior Technical Journalist’s  job to be sure we never do.

The Root voice (this is what you’ll write)
All of our brand experiences mirror the app that started it all: bold, human-centric, easy. Therefore, the Root voice is simple, direct, and approachable. No matter how complex the topic, we speak in a clear, straightforward way. We take complicated, highly regulated, data-driven content and break it down into succinct, clear copy for readers to understand. We might throw in a nod or joke on occasion , but it’s always well-placed and timed—and never just for the sake of it. And we never settle for easy puns—we’re much smart-funnier than that. The insurance industry is riddled with clichés and expected lines. We pride ourselves on rising above that.

Passion for the craft of writing
Strong writing isn’t just the ability to write a great headline or a descriptive piece of prose. At Root, it’s about clarity and humanity. It’s using great writing and grammar to communicate in a way that is accurate and easy, often with character limits. We constantly ask ourselves how we can say more with fewer words. And we prove it’s possible every day.

Due to the nature of our business, copy needs will range from serious and empathetic to fun and light. There will be times for creative copy to engage and times where copy should be simple and straightforward.

Deep empathy for the user
You put every effort into understanding the reader’s needs. Your background in research and journalism gives you a strong gut about how to get exactly what you need from subject matter experts. What you don’t/can’t garner from your SME, you learn through qualitative and quantitative research, analyzing previous feedback, and whatever other tools you have at your disposal.

You bias toward action
We want someone who is not only up for a challenge but seeks them out. We want someone who can thrive as part of a team but who is also comfortable working independently. Someone who is interested in researching and learning, whether it’s continued education about technical writing, following the ever-changing trends in the FinTech environment, or becoming an expert on a new insurance line Root is offering.

You make the complex simple
You have a knack for finding the story in complex topics and making them accessible to non-experts. You explain empathetically and never talk down to the listener.

Skill sets required

  • Grammar expert
  • Tight writer
  • Excellent proofreading skills
  • Advanced knowledge of email best practices
  • Advanced background in research
  • A solid knowledge of best practices for crafting white papers
  • Data lover (Our company was founded on the power of data; our job is to translate that story to our potential and current policyholders, as well as press, FinTech experts, and anyone else watching.)
  • Part-time strategist (Notice it doesn’t say “strategic thinker.” Of course you’re a strategic thinker, but Root writers connect all of their content back to strategy. And if for some reason there isn’t a strategy to be found, they’re quick to get the right people in the room to make it happen.)
  • Accustomed to working with legal/compliance teams to review content
  • Self-starter
  • Skilled collaborator
  • Flexible in working style (Sometimes design and data visualization will drive copy, sometimes copy will drive design, and sometimes you’ll volley back and forth.)

  • 10+ years of relevant writing/editing experience in a creative, editorial, or marketing environment
  • 3+ years of relevant technical writing/editing experience, preferably in either FinTech or an analytics-based environment
