We’re hiring a Director of Regulatory Relations and Reporting in Columbus, OH

The Role.
Root is looking for a Director of Regulatory Relations and Reporting with a background in P&C insurance regulatory reporting and deep experience working with department of insurance financial regulatory staff, including coordination of regulatory inquiries and examinations. This leader will play a crucial role in providing accounting and regulatory subject matter expertise in supporting business development and strategic activities, special projects and capital relief initiatives. This leader must have the presence and communication skills to interact effectively with external regulators and Root leadership on a frequent basis. The director will assist in developing the strategy and play a critical role in introductory and recurring discussions with regulators to promote innovation and technology in insurance. Ultimately, this individual is proficient in complex NAIC financial statement and capital requirements and has a proven ability to simplify for consumption to a broader audience. 
Reports to: Chief Accounting Officer 

What you'll be doing.

  • Serve as primary interface with DOIs for insurance company entity for financial result inquiries. 
  • Leverage subject matter expertise in conversations with regulators to assist Root in their ongoing geographic expansion.
  • In partnership with the legal compliance team and other leaders at Root, play an instrumental role “at the table” in the relationship management of external regulators.
  • Manage and oversee ongoing interaction between Root and Departments of Insurance, ensuring that commitments to the regulator are met in a timely and effective manner, liaising with Root leadership and subject matter experts to pull together appropriate responses and build strong regulatory relationships built on trust. 
  • Appropriately navigate conversations and relationships with regulators to report results and ensure appropriate compliance.
  • Collaborate with other accounting leaders to develop and implement policies and procedures to adapt to the rapidly evolving regulatory accounting standards.
  • Manage and coordinate a cross-functional response team to oversee regulatory interaction for financial regulatory examinations and liaise with internal stakeholders and regulators through all phases of the exam process.
  • Respond to inquiries from regulators and business partners on statutory financial statements and filings.
  • Work in strong partnership with cross-functional resources in assessing the accounting implications of new products and changing products.
  • Serve as technical resource in emerging statutory accounting guidance and contributing to overall regulatory capital relief strategies (including new company structuring and reinsurance-related endeavors).

What we're looking for.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or related field
  • 7+ years of professional experience with regulatory reporting; P&C insurance experience highly preferred
  • Active CPA is highly preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of statutory accounting principles, risk based capital requirements, insurance/reinsurance market trends and Insurtech business trends 
  • Experience working with departments of insurance financial regulatory staff during regulatory exams, building relationships and promoting innovation in insurance 
  • Self-starter skills, including a career path exemplified by taking on more diverse and sophisticated problem-solving tasks over time
  • Highly analytical; excels at leveraging data to drive highly effective and credible reporting
  • Problem-solving skills with ability to think strategically and innovatively
  • Roll-up-the sleeves work ethic and “do-what-it takes” attitude to efficiently execute and drive for results in a fast-pace work environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to thrive in a results-driven, fast-pace work environment
  • Naturally collaborative, excels at influencing without direct authority
