We’re hiring a Senior Financial Reporting & Technical Accountant in Columbus, OH

The position.
Root is looking for a deeply analytical and detail-oriented accountant with a strong background in technical accounting and SEC reporting. As a Senior Financial Reporting & Technical Accountant on our Financial Reporting team, you’ll be an integral player in the preparation of our financial statements, key in the research of complex technical accounting issues, and will provide thought leadership through recommendations to drive impactful business and accounting decisions. In addition, you will answer ad hoc investor requests, coordinate external audit and review processes, and constantly iterate on our accounting policies and procedures. The right candidate will have experience leveraging their accounting acumen to effectively drive change through all levels of an organization and thrives in a complex, innovative, and growing accounting environment

Reports to: Financial Reporting Manager

What you’ll be doing.

  • Owns the preparation of financial statements and monthly financial reporting packages and coordinates the internal and external review of these documents in a rapidly changing environment
  • Research and perform peer analysis to draft disclosures and incite  management discussion 
  • Support for quarterly investor reporting and ad hoc requests
  • Works with the Financial Reporting Manager to manage the external audit and review process, including the coordination and delivery of the required client prepared schedules
  • Assists the Financial Reporting Manager and the Accounting Research & Policy manager on financial statement and accounting questions and issues including drafting of white papers and presentations to management
  • Owns the research and assists with the implementation of new Accounting Standard Updates (ASUs) and other complex transactions
  • Helps implement and maintain reporting procedures to comply with stakeholder expectations
  • Assist in initiatives to implement more timely financial reporting requirements and improve month, quarter, and annual close cycle times
  • Uses technology and data analytical skills to enhance and improve the delivery of job responsibilities
  • Support effectiveness of the internal controls over the financial reporting process
  • Coordinates with various teams to perform fluctuation analysis on financial data
  • Supports the execution of all aspects of financial and regulatory reporting
  • Participates in other projects as required
  • Contributes to the development and maintenance of accounting policies and procedures

What we’re looking for.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting and/or Finance; active CPA license and P&C insurance experience preferred
  • 3-5 years of work experience in a Big Four, large regional public accounting firm, and/or corporate accounting/SEC reporting function
  • Technical knowledge of US GAAP and SEC reporting requirements
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a sense of ownership over their work
  • Self-starter and curious in nature, with strong interpersonal, teamwork, and partnering skills; comfortable working effectively with all levels of the organization
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an ability to solve complex problems and present recommendations in a clear and concise format with great attention to detail 
  • Must be able to work independently, manage multiple priorities and pivot between responsibilities
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products, accounting research, and data analytic tools
