We are looking for an attorney with a passion for building modern and efficient solutions to classic employment challenges. Root currently has 716 employees working throughout 15 states. The ideal candidate will be excited by the rapid headcount growth and states we have expanded into. This scale and distribution have strategic business advantages but also creates unique employment challenges. Our goal is to provide governance and support to all of our employees in a way that feels empowering and not unnecessarily restrictive while also protecting the company. We are excited to find a leader who can guide us in the next phase of employment-related matters at Root. 

Reports to: General Counsel


  • Work closely with the People Team and managers throughout the company to counsel them on legal risks related to employment policies and decisions
  • Partner closely with People Team on employee complaints and investigations
  • Collaborate with other members of the company to develop and evolve scalable employment policies, practices, and programs
  • Partner with the People, Legal, and Finance teams to manage the day-to-day tasks related to the employee stock equity plan, including responding to employee questions, drafting employee communications and maintaining an online equity management tool
  • Prepare training materials and conduct training sessions regarding employment best practices
  • Stay up to date on changes in employment law throughout the country, striving to spot trends in their infancy
  • Assist in managing outside employment counsel as necessary
  • Be willing to travel from time-to-time as necessary
  • Provide preventive, proactive legal advice on a broad range of employment practice topics, including discrimination, harassment, wrongful discharge, performance management, employee discipline and separations, workplace investigations, severance programs, leaves of absence and accommodations, recruiting, hiring, benefits, wage and hour, compensation, employment and separation agreements, unemployment and workers’ compensation, and immigration issues
  • Draft, implement, and maintain template documents and procedures for employment matters
  • Negotiate and manage employment-related contracts (e.g., talent and employment agreements, separation agreements, recruiter agreements, employee management platforms), and report to Root’s team on general risk management matters related to our workforce
  • Assist with employment diligence in connection with potential business acquisitions, and support post-acquisition integration activities for completed transactions


  • 5+ years experience at a top law firm employment practice, secondment or in-house experience a plus
  • J.D. from a top-tier law school
  • Member in good standing of the OH Bar
  • Excellent problem-solving capabilities, judgment, communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Must be an independent and strategic thinker who is a strong team player (no job is too small or too large) and willing to take on additional responsibilities
  • Possess strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to handle high volume while balancing competing demands
  • Be able to weigh risks against operational needs to develop reasoned recommendations, including risk mitigation strategies, and provide sound legal advice
  • Have good judgment, a high level of professional integrity and discretion, tact and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Working knowledge of all aspects of employment law, including wage and hour and FLSA exemption issues, matters relating to discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, workplace investigations and documentation, disability, FMLA, restrictive covenants, and whistleblowing protections
  • Enjoy working in a fast-growing, disruptive business
  • Past in-house or outside counsel to a technology company is preferred
