We’re hiring a VP of Claims in Columbus, OH

We're looking for a Vice President of Claims who will excel in building the best claims organization in the industry.

Root is the nation’s first licensed insurance carrier powered entirely by mobile and founded on the principle that car insurance rates should be based on how you drive, not who you are. Through smartphone technology and data science, Root measures driving behavior, and uses it as the primary factor in determining rates. The result is personalized car insurance for good drivers, better rates, and a seamless mobile app experience.

As of August 2019, we're currently available in 28 states which reach 64% of the population of the country. We still have significant growth potential simply through state expansion. We currently have 706 employees, 273 of which are in claims.

When Root launched in 2016, we outsourced our claims handling to a third-party administrator. We brought claims in-house at the very end of 2018, and in many ways, we're still in our infancy of building our claims function. One of our most significant advantages is that we've built a proprietary, bespoke claim management system. We're leveraging our core expertise of being a technology company to create advantages in both our internal claim handling operations and our customer-facing user experience.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of business units across the claims organization, including all claim functional areas and claims legal
  • Establish processes to drive technical claim handling, resulting in best-in-class loss performance while maintaining high customer satisfaction
  • Drive pace in a scalable manner, resulting in best-in-class LAE while maintaining high employee satisfaction
  • Utilize analytics, process automation, and technology to improve efficiencies within the claims operation
  • Judiciously drive innovation in claims with a high degree of discernment between true differentiators and superficial features
  • Create and execute talent development strategies for claims, recognizing the outsized impact that people have on the performance of the organization
  • Provide leadership across geographically dispersed teams, with physical offices in Columbus and Phoenix, remote adjusters in the Dallas area, and remote appraisers across the country
  • Rely on data to take a highly quantitative approach to claims handling, while also valuing qualitative feedback from customers and employees

Professional Qualifications

  • Tremendous breadth and depth of knowledge, likely requiring ten years of P&C claims leadership experience
  • Multi-jurisdictional and functional P&C claims experience
  • Strong technical understanding of liability and P&C principles
  • Experience managing complex P&C claims through closure, including claims that involved litigation, arbitration, and/or extra-contractual issues

  • Successful in both scrappy and entrepreneurial environments as well as more sophisticated and later-stage organizations

  • Inventive, understanding when to pursue creative solutions to problems while being thoughtful of their trade-offs
  • An entrepreneur who sees ambiguity as opportunity and obstacles as chances to build
  • Action-oriented with a history of getting things done in complex environments

  • Superior analytical skills and attention to detail with good business judgment and exceptional maturity, diplomacy, and communication skills
  • Results orientation with a strong work ethic. Must be tenacious, with the emotional intelligence to know when to push harder and when to look for alternative approaches
