We’re hiring a VP of Growth in Columbus, OH

The Role.
Root Insurance is seeking a Vice President of Growth Marketing to lead the expansion of their business by overseeing the strategy, development and operation of the company’s growth marketing team.   Working across the company and collaborating closely with brand marketing and product teams, this role will focus on the acquisition & retention of new customers through: optimizing and expanding the channel mix, improving conversion and leveling up forecasting, tracking & reporting, and thoroughly understanding/improving Root’s LTV:CAC.   

This is a high impact leadership position. The VP of Growth Marketing will help accelerate Root’s significant annual growth rate by driving both the strategy and execution of top-of-funnel lead generation and customer lifecycle marketing. The VP will manage the Root Insurance growth marketing budget and media planning & buying across all digital channels.  Leveraging analytical & creative skills, this person will be measured on reaching various audience segments and delivering targets while building an enduring brand. 

Based in Columbus, Ohio, this person will report into the Chief Product Officer.

The ideal candidate is someone who has a track record of scaling growth-stage businesses and who is energized by working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.  A successful candidate will have a strong background of determining, measuring, and improving LTV to CAC ratios and deep experience across all marketing channels including mobile. This person will possess a player-coach mentality -- the ability to be a strong mentor to grow and develop the team, but also be able to roll up their sleeves to get the job done. They are obsessed with keeping pace with the latest trends in growth marketing and are a seasoned leader who also excels at being a hands-on contributor.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and drive Root’s overall growth strategy, ensuring repeatable and scalable results, and communicating the strategy across all core functions
  • Lead the acquisition efforts and develop channel strategies to exceed monthly, quarterly, and annual targets with an eye toward cost-efficient growth and improving LTV:CAC
  • Inspire and motivate the growth team around clearly-set and communicated growth targets and drive towards execution
  • Identify high-potential channels to test and incorporate into the broader acquisition/retention plan (with an eye toward mobile) 
  • Partner with product on CRM efforts and help define cross-channel lifecycle marketing strategy across products leveraging email, SMS, direct mail and other channels to improve conversion throughout the funnel
  • Expand on existing customer segmentation to identify new customer segments and more effectively target new and existing customers
  • Optimize the channel mix and customer journey through rigorous testing and experimentation
  • Work across finance, business intelligence/data, and business ops teams to optimize the attribution model and track, forecast and report on results to senior management and the board

Ideal Qualifications:

  • 10-15+ years of marketing experience, with expertise building in-house, high performance digital marketing teams, ideally having significantly scaled a budget or managed a budget of $60M+
  • Growth stage, digital-first, B2C experience
  • Deep performance marketing expertise, with a track-record of successfully testing channels, scaling campaigns and implementing a robust marketing strategy
  • Ability to toggle effortlessly between big picture strategy and in-the-weeds tactical problem-solving
  • A strong problem-solving track record - ability to think critically through unique problems with no set playbook and quickly implement a path to a solution
  • Able to use data and analytics to inform decisions and influence change 
  • The ability to thrive in fast-paced, entrepreneurial environments - with experience in a high growth company
  • Experience building and scaling high-performing teams, as well as budgets, tools, and programs
  • Highly collaborative, with experience working ​effectively across brand, product, design, engineering, etc.
  • Operational understanding of the marketing team’s contributions to the business P&L and sound fiscal judgment
  • Mission aligned and energized by using technology to improve people’s lives
