The Position: The Director of Compliance is responsible for ensuring that the day-to-day insurance operations of Root are in compliance with regulatory and legal requirements, including the company’s policies and procedures for areas such as rate, rule and form filings, market regulation, new laws and regulations. This includes promoting awareness of compliance matters with internal business partners, monitoring success in implementing compliance actions, assisting in the development of compliance plans/programs, and/or quality assurance reviews and managing market conduct examinations.

Reports to: General Counsel

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervises market conduct and regulatory exams and acts as chief liaison between company personnel and examiners.
  • Develops, implements and maintains processes and procedures to identify compliance gaps, weaknesses, and deficiencies and collaborates with internal partners to establish and deploy action plans for improved compliance.
  • Develops, implements and maintains a system of tracking laws, regulations and bulletins.
  • As applicable, manages more complex and controversial compliance/regulatory matters, and provides technical expertise to support business partners.
  • Maintains a market conduct and regulatory examination database for use in trending and developing and tracking action plans to address those criticisms contained in market conduct and regulatory exams.
  • Collects, analyzes, summarizes and distributes internally insurance department and industry information on compliance issues and trends.
  • Stays current on changes and developments that impact business requirements.
  • Builds strong business relationships with internal and industry personnel involved in compliance-related matters.
  • May manage others, establish and monitor objectives, and provide guidance and work direction.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong leadership background, communication and diplomacy skills.
  • Project management and effective resource management skills.
  • 10 or more years of insurance industry experience, primarily in compliance for P&C personal lines related products.
  • Experience building or re-building an insurance compliance program and/or team.
  • Experience supervising market conduct or similar regulatory exams and successfully serving as liaison between a company and the regulator.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the insurance regulatory environment, with extensive experience with state and/or federal regulatory schemes.
  • Analytical and technical skills to understand “root causes” of compliance deficiencies and effectiveness of controls.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred (JD preferred but not required).
  • Compliance certification preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic development environment.
  • Ability to consistently execute and deliver results.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment and make strong recommendations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and manage well at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated integrity and dedication.
  • Travel required.
