We’re hiring a Behavioral Scientist in Columbus, OH

Update: We're excited that you're interested in Root. Given that most of us are working from home and the level of uncertainty around the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic, we've decided to pause hiring for the time being. We welcome you to apply, and if it's a great fit, we'll reach out when we start to ramp up hiring again.

Position: Root is looking for a cross-functional business partner with deep expertise in behavioral science who will help us develop a deeper understanding of the contextual and hidden drivers of consumer and customer behavior. Building a product and creating a brand that customers love requires rigorous experimentation and iteration. This team member will act as an internal consultant and evangelize the use of behavioral science frameworks when designing experiments so we can apply those learnings to drive business results. Another key component of this position will be to synthesize learnings from external sources, make recommendations, and guide the implementation of those recommendations by connecting with stakeholders across the company.

Reports to: Director of Consumer Insights and Analytics

  • Serve as a business partner to all teams at Root to apply behavioral science to generate deeper insights and increase the effectiveness of experimentation.
  • Apply academic theories and frameworks to solve short- and long-term business challenges.

  • Effectively engages stakeholders and leadership in encouraging the application of behavioral science in experimentation.
  • Independently stays up-to-date on industry and academic research that could inform action at Root.

What we're looking for

  • PhD in a behavioral science discipline (cognitive or social psychology, behavioral economics, marketing, or a related discipline)
  • Strong foundation in research design and analysis, with an emphasis on experimental and quasi-experimental. Experience with implicit measurement and analysis is preferred.
  • 5+ years experience conducting behavioral science research to generate actionable insights. Strong publication record preferred for candidates with primarily academic experience.
  • Some professional experience outside of academia preferred but not required (e.g., marketing research, consumer insights).
  • Exceptional communication skills, written and verbal; ability to present complicated material to a range of stakeholders with differing levels of technical expertise.
  • Strong people and relationship building skills.
  • High attention to detail; comfortable independently multitasking and prioritizing projects in a fast-paced work environment.
  • A do-what-it-takes attitude to effectively drive business results through the application of behavioral science.
