We’re hiring a

Director, UX Product Design

Remote - United States

The Position.

Root Inc. is seeking a Director of Product Design to be the lead advocate in solving consumer needs through Root’s auto insurance product experience. The person in this role will represent product design at the executive level, empower design across the organization, implement and guide strategic direction for the group, and continue to build on the great team of designers already at Root.

This is a remote role and will report to the Chief Product Officer.

Executive Leadership

As Director of Product Design, you will work closely with the broader executive leadership team to identify opportunities for the business, and work directly with the Product Team to build the strategic and tactical roadmap against company objectives. Defining and analyzing A/B tests, qualitative research, and facilitating the design process are all key elements of the role. While a strong comfort with working in data-rich environments is necessary, you should also be capable of being decisive in the absence of data. You should be comfortable engaging in respectful debate about business-critical decisions.

Design Advocacy

In close partnership with the Product team, you will guide team direction, set context, and ensure design standards are upheld across initiatives. The ideal candidate is passionate about understanding and meeting customer needs. This role requires the ability to direct generative and conceptual research to best document and synthesize customer needs so they can be communicated across the company.

Coach

The Director of Product Design is responsible for supporting the product design team members, identifying opportunities for growth, and making sure they are set up for success. You should be comfortable coaching designers at all levels both in design and broader product thinking.

What you will do.

  • Engage with Product Lead in facilitating product roadmap development based on company objectives
  • Serve as direct manager to Director of Product Design and a team of Senior Product Managers
  • Ensure the broader Product Design team understands key company objectives and how their work supports them
  • Understand our key audiences, the product needs they have, and ensure our product features are meeting those needs as they evolve over time
  • Identify and support high-potential features and tests that align with audience needs
  • Audit the existing user experience for further refinement and engagement
  • Routinely review the brand presence within the product and ensure it aligns with other external brand extensions and marketing initiatives
  • Ensure the customer journey is mapped for each product extension with clear inflection points
  • Develop a cadence to ensure senior executives have a clear understanding of Product Design’s larger initiatives
  • Develop a strong feedback loop with Customer Support
  • Guide the team through thoughtful testing and experimentation
  • Develop great working relationships across Engineering, Marketing, and Research teams to facilitate clear communication, unified goals, and efficient workstreams
  • Develop a strong opinion about the insurance and financial technology industries and drive Root to continue to disrupt incumbents in the space

What you should have.

The ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about solving problems through a well-designed experience. Customer empathy is critical. You are comfortable with a fast-paced shipping cadence. You bias toward action, knowing that experimentation is more impactful than prolonged debate. You have a high command of visual design and can provide strong creative direction to your team to deliver on the promise our brand makes to our customers. You understand the power of a clear, compelling, and consistent brand across product experiences and new product extensions. You can position your team’s work well in presentations across the company. You are a thought leader with the ability to inspire a team of designers to be proactive innovators.

Root values transparency, ease, and personalization throughout the product experience. The Director of Product Design is responsible for bringing these principles to life in every aspect of the product.

Ideal Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of product design experience, with experience leading high performing product design teams
  • Deep product design expertise, with a proven track-record of successfully designing and testing product features, solving customer needs, and aligning with strategy
  • Experience managing a team across multiple locations
  • Ability to toggle between big picture strategy and in-the-weeds design problem-solving
  • Ability to develop strategies and frameworks as objectives evolve
  • Ability to communicate clearly on key priorities, strategies, and customer needs
  • Experience in guiding team members through product design principles
  • Comfort in taking big bets
  • Ability to use data and analytics to inform decisions and influence change
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced, entrepreneurial environments, with experience in a high growth company
  • Experience building and scaling high-performing teams
  • Highly collaborative, with experience working effectively across teams
  • Mission aligned and energized by using technology to improve people’s lives
