We’re hiring a Head of Tax in Columbus, OH

The role.
Root is seeking a leader in our new role as Head of Tax. We are looking for an expert who brings strategic leadership to business partners across Root, directs tax activities and influences business decisions. Tax compliance, financial reporting and tax planning activities and strategies will be core responsibilities for this role. The ideal candidate for this role has substantial experience in the financial services industry, ideally within the P&C Insurance sector. The Head of Tax will provide oversight to third-party tax service providers and lead and develop a team of tax professionals. The Head of Tax will be responsible for oversight of technical analysis, documentation, tax accounting, and compliance with regulatory requirements as it relates to International, Federal, State, and Local taxation (as applicable). 

This position reports to the Chief Accounting Officer. 

What you'll do.

  • Oversee tax accounting with a strong foundation in accounting for income taxes under both US GAAP and statutory accounting to support the quarterly and annual tax accounting and disclosure reporting requirements
  • Consult and partner with other finance divisions and business partners to address tax issues and meet organizational objectives. Deliver professional and timely tax insights, guidance, and/or strategy to internal and external stakeholders. Partner with various business leaders to understand business operations; proactively identify tax planning opportunities. Develop and lead tax-related training for business partners where appropriate
  • Provide leadership and vision for the tax team, working with information technology and accounting/finance partners to develop best practices with the implementation of accounting system procedures that will facilitate compliance with tax rules and income and premium tax reporting
  • Manage and oversee relationship with third-party tax service providers
  • Recognize and explain highly complex tax compliance and reporting considerations to business and finance/accounting partners
  • Oversee preparation and filing of Federal, State, and Local tax returns in a timely manner
  • Review and analyze opportunities for tax involving tax planning, R&D tax credit opportunities, M&A transactions, debt and equity financing, share-based compensation, and many other strategic transactions
  • Oversee research and responses to requests and inquiries from tax authorities, state insurance examiners, and external auditors
  • Review and issue final sign-off on all tax-related matters relevant to the Company
  • Oversee the design and execution of tax controls in compliance with Sarbanes Oxley and Model Audit Rule statutes and constantly monitor for updates and changes.
  • Assist the People Team with payroll and benefit tax processes as well as projects related to employer/employee compliance. 
  • Collaborate with the FP&A team on accurate tax forecasting and impacts on the business.
  • As the tax team grows, maintain a high-performance culture by building skills through coaching, mentoring and ongoing training and development
  • Stay on top of the developments in tax regulation in the jurisdictions where Root operates
  • Work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task and make quick and independent decisions

What we're looking for.

  • 10+ years of experience in tax and compliance leadership in the financial services or insurance industry. 
  • Deep expertise and technical aptitude related to tax accounting principles, SOX, ASC 740, U.S. GAAP, statutory, premium tax, and federal and state income tax concepts. 
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting or related field. 
  • CPA required, other advanced certifications and/or willingness to engage in continued learning are preferable. 
  • Strong negotiation and partnership skills, across all levels of management, with ability to influence and challenge decisions and processes
  • Ability to frame up issues, options, and solutions using financial data for business decision-making
  • Experience navigating change with both internal and external stakeholders 
  • Proven ability to work in fast-paced, detailed, and deadline-oriented environment by balancing multiple priorities and internal and external resources simultaneously
  • Excellent conflict resolution and facilitation skills.
  • Operates with strong conceptual thinking rather than strictly in a 'rules' framework.
