We’re hiring a Director, Corporate FP&A in Columbus, OH

The role.
As our Finance team positions Root for the next chapter as a quickly-growing public company, we're looking for a Director of Corporate FP&A to build out the process and framework supporting our consolidated business forecast, which will be utilized to drive reporting, insights and action across the company . This leader will continuously build and leverage our financial model to unlock our capabilities to answer burning questions about the business quickly, staying several steps ahead of senior leadership, investors, and other stakeholders. We're looking for someone to utilize their deep expertise in a highly regulated, public environment to set Root up for success in both the short and long term. This person must be highly analytical with an ability to see both "the forest and the trees," and also have a knack for communicating complex ideas to a wide variety of audiences. This position will have a major impact on Root's growth and ability to win in the market and will have direct and regular interaction with senior leadership. What you'll be doing.

  • Own the financial forecasting process and framework for the consolidated Root company, as well as for all individual business units / entities covering income statement, balance sheet and cash flow. 
  • Lead a high-performing team to develop and refine company-wide short-term and long-term financial models incorporating GAAP and STAT reporting and appropriately reflecting complex structures including reinsurance, debt/equity structures, and unit economics. Foster productive relationships with accounting counterparts to evaluate and implement evolving accounting policies into the forecasting process. 
  • Proactively execute scenario and sensitivity analyses on key drivers of growth, profit, and capital to inform decision-making and communicate results and the associated impacts on unit economics, financial statements, liquidity, capital structure, debt/equity returns in presentations for executive and investor audiences, including support for SEC external reporting, investor diligence and BOD communications. 
  • Partner with other Finance team members in monthly forecast cycles and annual budgeting efforts, including working with functional leaders to identify/update planning assumptions for key business drivers. 
  • Develop and maintain a concise but high-impact reporting suite through partnership with accounting and the analytics and strategic planning teams to provide insight into operating shortfalls/successes, along with recommendations for improvement. 
  • Build-out dynamic, timely reporting on KPIs and monthly financial output, leveraging input from business to further develop reporting to support state management, regulatory capital, and other needs. 
  • Communicate monthly updates to inform leadership of current variance to plan and support action planning to ensure performance is in-line with budget.
  • Collaborate with Management on strategic and operational prioritization by overseeing  appropriate financial analysis as requested. Create scalable solutions including development of standard templates and methodology for use by other parts of the organization. 
  • Manage and/or execute ad-hoc analytic requests - supporting Board of Directors, analyst or investor relations materials including presentations and narrative memorandum.

What we're looking for.

  • 8-10 years working within FP&A in a public company reporting environment, with direct oversight over financial modeling and projections, along with management of a high-perfoming team. 
  • Insurance, banking or other highly-regulated industry experience preferred 
  • A bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business or a related quantitative field, MBA or CFA preferred
  • Highly analytical, with proven capabilities in data-intensive financial analysis backed by strong financial modeling skills in Excel. Proficiency with financial statement analysis and forecasting, including an understanding of GAAP and Statutory Accounting principles and the ability to communicate with experts. 
  • Experience managing / maintaining complex driver-based financial forecasts with fully integrated financial statements for corporate entities or otherwise complex business structure. 
  • Experience developing talent and managing a team, ability to give direction and clarity to direct reports tasked with complex analysis and competing priorities.
  • Self-starter with a high degree of demonstrated responsibility and ownership. 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with associates at all levels, board members and key external partners. 
  • Strong verbal and written presentation skills including the ability to communicate complex financial concepts in a simple way and to tailor key messages and presentation style to multiple audiences. 
  • Approaches problem solving with natural intellectual curiosity, open-mindedness, and comfort with ambiguity. 
  • Proven ability to execute on projects quickly and has a “get things done” mentality.
