We’re hiring a Claims Auto Damage Appraiser - Level One in Columbus, OH

Things are going well for us at Root. We have raised almost $200 million in venture capital funding to date, and we recently closed our Series D funding round, raising $100 million in capital at a $1 billion valuation in August 2018. Currently, we use a third party that serves as our claims function and have determined the time is ripe to begin transitioning this critical function in-house. We recently introduced first notice of loss capability into our mobile app and are building back end systems as first steps. Our goal is to leverage technology, data and our people to build a claims experience that is recognized as number 1 in the industry.

As a Claims Auto Damage Appraiser (Level One), you’ll play a critical role in enforcing the fundamental fairness values on which our company was founded.  You’ll be asked to push the boundaries of what’s required and to think critically as to what our customers want and to how that best aligns with our product.  By collecting information, making recommendations for claims processes to iterate towards automation and further develop our app features, you’ll be helping to build and enhance an entirely new insurance experience from the ground up. This role is vital to Root’s success as we continue to rapidly grow and is largely responsible for our bottom line.

Major Objectives

  • Delivers an industry-leading claim experience for all policyholders and claimants
  • Writes, reviews and/or issues payment for vehicle repairs or vehicle replacement
  • Creates accurate vehicle repair estimates based upon owner-provided vehicle damage photos and other supporting documentation
  • Reviews supplemental requests for additional repairs or parts usage
  • Negotiates and settles total loss situations with policyholders and claimants
  • Prepares salvage vehicles for auction and oversees the end-to-end salvage process
  • Consistently makes prompt and courteous contact with every claim customer
  • Maintains and updates a diary/schedule for each claim in the appraiser’s pending
  • Responds to claim correspondence in a timely fashion with very high quality
  • Coordinates the repair of damaged vehicles, and assists with rental reimbursement
  • Provides input for continuous development of claims guidelines and best practices
  • Recommends potential product developments and process improvements
  • Interacts and communicates effectively with customers, peers, vendors and managers
  • Engages in learning opportunities to build knowledge of personal lines claims, court decisions impacting the claims function, current guidelines in claims function, and policy changes and modifications

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
  • 1+ years of successful experience handling Personal Auto insurance claims, where applicant was directly responsible for:
  • Writing estimates, approving supplements, coordinating rental extensions, and negotiating final settlement of total losses; OR Investigating coverage, making liability decisions, issuing payments, securing recorded statements, and maintaining claim reserves.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain insurance licenses in several states within three months
  • High sense of professionalism while remaining empathetic
  • Familiarity with claims best practices required
  • Curious in nature
  • Great attention to detail
  • Ability to approach problems with an open mind
