We’re hiring a NLP Data Scientist in Columbus, OH

The company: Root is a company of 180 and (mindfully) growing. In March of 2015, we set out to build an insurance solution that accomplished two things: 1) provided an unprecedented user experience and 2) leveraged modern data to more accurately predict risk. The product that we created, a mobile application through which we sell insurance, allows us to satisfy both of these objectives.

The culture: Things have been going very well for us and there is still a lot of interesting work ahead. Root is a venture-backed technology company. Our early signs of success are in large part due to our unwavering standards in hiring. We recognize that our product is only as good as the hearts and minds building it. We look for individuals who can find solutions to our challenges by going through the cycle of ideation to implementation with curiosity and vigor. We expect every team member to lead with empathy and respect. Our open office space is filled with the rhythmic tapping of keyboards, percussive “pop” of LaCroix cans, and the hum of formative conversation. The team eats catered lunch together Monday-Thursday.

The job:
Root is seeking a Data Scientist to join our team as a domain expert in natural language processing (NLP). The ideal candidate will have experience applying modern machine learning techniques to NLP problems in areas such as text classification, representation learning, named entity recognition, information extraction, structured prediction, topic modeling, and semi-supervised learning. Experience with speech processing is a plus. This role will revolutionize the processes of our customer service and claims organization. Key problems may be related to automating various customer service operations, such as responses to emails or phone calls, algorithmic measurement of customer sentiment and other attributes of audio recordings, predicting development of reported as well as unreported claims, fraud detection, and other exciting initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of industry experience applying NLP techniques to real world problems OR PhD-level research experience in NLP
  • Strong programming skills, especially Python

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or Statistics
  • Experience with state of the art methods for natural language and speech processing
  • Familiarity and working knowledge of TensorFlow or PyTorch
