We created a mobile car insurance app, and we changed the entire industry in the process. Design has been a critical component of the company every step of the way.

The team
This position is a key role within our Creative Team. Following a recent rebrand, the team is focused on delivering the brand through clear, bold, void-of-jargon-and-cliche communications. We’re looking for a person to lead this team of in-house designers and guide the way our brand takes shape through many different channels, centered around marketing and business needs.

The role
This role serves as the manager to four designers who are responsible for Root’s marketing and brand presence. Their work spans all mediums and must be original, conceptual, clear, and unified. The Creative Director is responsible for ensuring the work is on-brand, on-strategy, and on time, all while pushing the limits to create fresh, unique creative work. Success in this role is determined by:

  • The ability to give clear feedback and guide designers as they move from project to project, spanning design, illustration, video, and integration with copy. 
  • The ability to work with Program and Project Management to create appropriate timelines and deliver work against them.
  • The ability to tweak, test, and constantly improve — partnering with the Marketing team to arrive at the highest-performing work that meets business goals.
  • The ability to think strategically, developing and translating big ideas (that are rooted in customer insights) into actionable tactics across many different channels. 
  • Knowing our customer base and what work and messaging connects with them.
  • The ability to troubleshoot, remaining agile as timing and business directions shift.
  • Growing the individual skillsets of the designers, cultivating their career development.

This role is a mix of leading and doing. The Creative director is responsible for the work, from concepting to completion, and that may require diving into the design work from time to time.  

The details:
Candidate should be a seasoned creative, with 7+ years experience at agencies, design firms, or in-house. They should have several years of creative team management experience. The role reports to the Chief Brand Officer.
